College Lingo

You will hear several academic terminologies at ASU and we want to help you decipher what they mean! What does FAFSA mean? What is an Academic Advisor? Have no fear, this terminology guide below is here to help!

General College Terms

  • Apply Texas - application system to apply for admissions to Texas public institutions
  • TSI - Texas Success Initiative - assessment for reading, writing and math skills to ensure students enrolling in a Texas public institution possess the necessary academic skills to be successful in their classes
  • FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act - federal law that protects and governs the privacy of student education records
  • FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid - application used to determine eligibility for grants, loans and work-study programs
  • Academic Advisor - Staff that will advise and guide students on degree programs and classes to register (not to be confused with an Admission Counselor who helps students through the application and admission process)
  • Application Deferment - An online form that students can fill out to change their application from one semester to another
  • Undergraduate Student - a student who is working towards a bachelor’s level degree or lower after graduating high school or receiving their GED
  • Graduate Student - a student who is working towards a master’s level degree or higher after completing a bachelor’s degree

RamFam Lingo

  • CID - campus ID number - assigned number to identify you in the student information system
  • RamPort - ASU’s web portal for the campus community. Students will use this to check their application status, see financial aid awards, register for classes, view or pay their bill, and access their educational records.
  • OneCard-official ID card for ASU students - used for meal plans and access to residence halls and certain events
  • NSO - New Student Orientation - one-day program to help incoming students learn more about ASU, meet with an academic advisor and register for classes
  • Ram Round-Up - Ram Round-Up is a three day, two-night camp designed to help you transition to the Angelo State University family. At Ram Round-Up you will meet your future classmates, experience ASU traditions, interact with faculty and staff, and learn about resources/services available on campus.
  • Rams Connect - a customizable portal for prospective students to learn more about ASU programs and activities, and connect with other future and current students
  • Ram Family Connection - a portal for parents to read information about navigating the application process and helping their student succeed in college, and connect with other ASU parents
