Angelo State University’s 268 park-like acres of campus with groves of live oak, pecan and palm trees is situated in a residential neighborhood of San Angelo, the center of a West Texas community of more than 100,000 friendly people.
When you enroll at ASU, you’ll not only find yourself immersed in campus life, but you’ll become part of a community that supports and encourages its college students. San Angelo residents take pride in creating a distinctive community where people can engage in a number of outdoor activities, as well as enjoy shopping, restaurants and entertainment options. The city offers the amenities you would find in a large city with the convenience of a small town.
San Angelo enjoys an average of 251 sunny days each year. The weather allows the city – and the university – to host a number of outdoor events and festivities.
At the city’s River Stage, you can enjoy annual outdoor concerts in May, July and September. And don’t forget to check out the River Walk, a public four-mile jogging/walking trail that includes gardens and a nine-hole golf course. While you’re downtown, you may want to visit the International Water Lily Garden, a beautiful display of lilies from around the world.
Every summer, the city hosts a drag boat racing event that draws competitors from across the state. At the opposite time of the year, the annual Christmas at Old Fort Concho event includes historical re-enactments, an arts and crafts show and food.
And these are just a few of the city’s outdoor events and attractions!
If you enjoy the arts, then you’re in luck because San Angelo has a lot to offer. In addition to regular performances by the Angelo Civic Theatre and the San Angelo Symphony, the city has a few special jewels. The Chicken Farm Art Center, a compound of galleries, studios and restaurants, features work from artists of all mediums and is open to the public on the first Saturday of every month. And of course, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, a work of art in its own right, has a renowned permanent ceramics collection and is the site of diverse traveling exhibitions.
Entertainment for All Interests
San Angelo offers a variety of entertainment options to fit your interests. With nearby Lake Nasworthy, you can go boating, fishing, wind sailing and wakeboarding. The ASU Lake House, along with the Outdoor Adventures program, also provides students with training and equipment to use at the lake. In addition, outdoorsy-types can enjoy hunting, camping and cycling in areas surrounding San Angelo.
For those who like the hustle and bustle of the city, San Angelo offers fun and funky downtown shopping at one-of-a-kind stores on Concho Avenue. And you may even want to check out Stephens Central Library, a new hub for the downtown area with its café and live music performances. If you’re a fan of live music, you’ll probably want to visit some of San Angelo’s dance clubs and pubs, where you’ll find every kind of music from Texas country and rockabilly to jazz and Tex Mex.
San Angelo also offers all of the big box stores and restaurant chains that you find in metropolitan areas, so you have options to meet your shopping and dining needs. The large multiplex movie theatre is also a popular entertainment destination.
And if you want an authentic West Texas experience, make plans to attend the annual San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo held every year during the last two weeks in February. It’s ranked in the top 10 largest rodeos in the U.S., and with all of the sights and sounds of the midway, there’s sure to be something for everyone to enjoy.
