Henry short stories, continuing Sunday, Nov. 23, in the ASU Modular Theatre. Show time for the matinee performance is 2 p.m., with lunch served at 12:45 p.m.

Set in New York at Christmastime, “The Gifts of the Magi” features music by Randy Courts and lyrics by Mark St. Germain and Courts. Drawn from two O. Henry short stories, elements of humor and drama are woven into a musical about sacrifice for love. Out of work and penniless, young lovers Jim and Della each part with their most precious possession to buy a Christmas gift for the other. In addition, there are glimpses of various city folk and the hilarious plight of a bum named Soapy, who wants to get arrested so he can spend the night in a cozy cell. “The Gifts of the Magi” premiered in 1984 and was hailed as “a bright and beguiling musical” in New York reviews.

The ASU production of “The Gifts of the Magi” is being directed by Dr. Bill Doll, professor of theatre and director of University Theatre. The student cast comprises Josiah Hernandez as Willy Porter, Adam Rich as Jim Dillingham, Janae Hatchett as Della Dillingham, Mason Gable as Soapy Smith, Nicholas S. Cline as The City-Him and Kala Young as The City-Her.
