Chorale Presents Handel’s ‘Messiah’

Friday, November 21, 2014 7:30 p.m. Free

Angelo State University’s Chorale, along with the Permian Basin String Quartet and members of the San Angelo Symphony, will perform Handel’s “Messiah” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in the McNease Convention Center, 500 Rio Concho Drive.

The Baroque-era oratorio, originally an Easter offering, has become a Christmas season special event that still awes listeners more than 250 years after the death of George Frederic Handel, a German-born composer who lived most of his life in London. “Messiah” debuted on April 13, 1742, in Dublin’s Musick Hall.

The ASU Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Pamela Lee of the ASU music faculty, performs the demanding composition once every four years. This performance will include a reunion of choir alumni from as far back as the 1940s. In addition to “Messiah,” the chorale will perform favorite seasonal hymns.

The performance is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Lee, a music professor in the Department Visual and Performing Arts, at 325-486-6035 or pamela.lee@angelo.edu.
